The gallery calls at nine. Solvenne has until midnight to deliver the painting that could pay her rent for a year. She sets up her easel on the quiet end of the beach, and at ten past nine a stranger sits down right in the middle of her view and starts reading.
Episode 2
She asks him to move. He asks why the painting needs to be empty. She has no good answer. By half past eleven he is in the picture, a small figure with a book under the palm, and it is the best thing on the canvas.
Episode 3
His name is Elias, and he is leaving on the last ferry tonight for a job on the other side of the world. He tells her this over grilled fish as if it were a weather report. She paints faster after lunch and pretends that is because of the light.
Episode 4
A gust of wind throws the canvas face down in the sand. The paint is ruined. Elias is the one who kneels, scrapes, and says they can save it. They spend the golden hour fixing a painting together, side by side, not talking much.
Episode 5
The painting is finished at nine. She has to choose between delivering it to the gallery across town or walking him to the ferry. Both close at the same time. She looks at the clock, the canvas, the man.
